A LEGACY OF CARING FOR THE LAND

At the Four Sixes Ranch, stewardship is not a slogan. It is the foundation of everything we do. For more than 150 years, caring for the land, livestock, and people of this ranch has been a responsibility passed down through generations.

Founded by Captain Samuel “Burk” Burnett in the 1870s, the ranch has grown into one of the most respected operations in American ranching. The ranch’s success has always depended on one simple principle. Take care of the land, and it will take care of the livestock and the people who depend on it.

Stewardship here means making thoughtful decisions that protect the ranch today while preserving it for generations to come.

02

RESPONIBLE RANCH MANAGEMENT

Operating across more than 260,000 acres of rangeland, the Four Sixes Ranch relies on careful management of its natural resources. The ranch is divided into numerous pastures and management units designed to support healthy grazing and sustainable forage production.

Our approach combines time-tested ranching practices with modern land management tools, including:

  • Strategic grazing management
  • Brush management to restore native grasses
  • Prescribed burning to maintain healthy ecosystems
  • Livestock water development to support both wildlife and cattle

These practices help maintain strong forage systems, healthy wildlife habitat, and resilient rangeland capable of withstanding the extreme conditions of the Texas Plains.

03

PROTECTING THE LAND FOR THE LONG TERM

Stewardship often requires difficult decisions. During the historic Texas drought of 2011, ranch leadership made the costly choice to relocate cattle operations out of state rather than risk permanent damage to the ranch’s rangeland. That decision protected more than a century of cattle genetics and allowed the land time to recover.

The goal has always been to maintain the land in a condition that supports healthy cattle, thriving wildlife, and a sustainable future for the ranch.

04
